Chris Sutton hails Tottenham Hotspur hero Harry Kane.

Chris Sutton has told The Mail that he is astonished that Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane has set a new record for Premier League goals in a calendar year.

Sutton played alongside Alan Shearer at Blackburn when he struck 36 goals. Kane’s successive hat-tricks for Tottenham have seen him reach 39.

The pundit believes Kane is not as happy go lucky as he comes across off the pitch, and says he believes the striker’s attitude is what sets him apart.

Sutton said: “Shearer made scoring look effortless when it is anything but. It is the same with Kane. Do not be fooled by Kane’s mild-mannered demeanour in interviews. He has a ruthless desire which has driven him to the highest level.

“Shearer had an obsessive nature and determination to be the best. While he has congratulated Kane, I am sure deep down he will be gutted to lose his record.”

Kane’s treble did not just break Alan Shearer’s record, but it also elevated him above Barcelona icon Lionel Messi for the most goals scored in Europe in 2017.

The Spurs ace netted a stunning 56 goals in 52 games, bettering Messi’s 54 in 64 matches.

Argentina's Lionel Messi is pictured during the 2018 World Cup qualifier football match against Peru in Buenos Aires on October 5, 2017.

If Kane really wants to set his sights high for next year, then Lionel Messi’s 91 goals in 2012 is the quite unbelievable tally he should be trying to top.

As Sutton points out, Kane is not a player who publicly discusses a desire to chase individual accolades, and wants to be a team player first and foremost.

But when goalscoring comes as naturally to him as it does, he will have his own targets he aspires to privately which drive him on, and Tottenham are the lucky beneficiaries of this.
