Wolves have lacked a prolific goalscorer this season but Donovan Wilson is scoring for fun in the reserves.
It doesn’t take a genius, or indeed a well-paid football manager, to realise where Wolves’ problems lay this season.
Between them, Jon Dadi Bodvarsson, Nouha Dicko and the exiled Paul Gladon have netted just five Championship goals this season. And they are the only natural centre-forwards at manager Paul Lambert’s disposal.
However, rather than use their connections with super-agent Jorge Mendes and spend big on another Benfica starlet, perhaps Wolves should look a little closer to home for a solution.
17-year-old striker Donovan Wilson insisted that he simply could not afford to turn down the opportunity to make the move to Molineux from Bristol Rovers in 2014, as reported by the Express and Star. It took almost three years for the forward to make his debut, however, in February’s FA Cup defeat to Chelsea.
Though, at the age of 20, it appears that Wilson is finally ready to make waves in the first-team. Lambert has already shown a readiness to give youth a chance at Wolves, handing senior bows to Connor Ronan, Bright Enobakhare (below) and Morgan Gibbs-White and Wilson is surely ready to follow in their footsteps.
Two superbly taken goals against Norwich for Wolves’ Under-23s on Monday night, including a fantastic overhead kick, means he has now netted 11 times this season for the reserves. As it stands, he appears the most natural goalscorer on the club’s books.
“We’ve struggled to score goals so I thought his speed could help us,” Lambert told the Birmingham Mail after Wilson’s late cameo in the 2-0 home loss to Chelsea.
“He’s got a chance. He’s probably still behind Bright, Connor and Morgan.”
Like the aforementioned trio, however, Wilson’s chance should come sooner rather than later.
