Fabrizio Romano claims that Aston Villa winger Trezeguet is about to leave the club and join Turkish side Istanbul Basaksehir until the summer on loan. The Turkish transfer window comes to an end on Tuesday.
Trezeguet, 27, has only managed one appearance for Villa during the 2021-22 season and while that has largely been down to injury – he has returned, only to warm the bench under new manager Steven Gerrard.
At the African Cup of Nations, his game time was much more plentiful, as Egypt reached the final of the competition – only to lose to Senegal on penalties. Liverpool’s Sadio Mane scored in the shootout to win.
Since joining Villa almost three years ago, Trezeguet has been a bit-part player – totalling just 64 appearances in all competitions. Now, with his contract expiring in 2023, it appears the beginning of the end is upon us.
Indeed, while Basaksehir – who sit fifth in the SuperLig and boast the likes of Nacer Chadli – are only signing him on loan, his long-term future is a doubt. Romano says it a ‘done deal’ and a medical has been completed.

Trezeguet is right to leave Villa. The signings of Leon Bailey, Bertrand Traore and Philippe Coutinho – twinned with Ollie Watkins being used out wide – saw Anwar El Ghazi jump ship in January, joining Everton.
His game time would have been limited if he stayed, getting the odd substitute appearance here and there. A return to Turkey, having a hand in 43 goals in 71 Kasimpasa games, will re-install his confidence.
