Donald Trump once made his pick in the greatest of all time debate between Michael Jordan and LeBron James.

Trump’s answer had nothing to do with numbers or titles. It was all about personality and the image each player carried.

The comment came during a 2020 interview on Fox Sports Radio. The US president was asked to name his choice between the two players who have dominated basketball conversations for years.

Donald Trump picked Michael Jordan as his greatest of all time

He did not hesitate with his answer when asked to choose his GOAT between Jordan and LeBron James.

“Michael Jordan, plus he wasn’t political, so people like him better. They have enough politics with guys like me. They don’t need more,” Trump said, via The Guardian.

He added: “There was a nastiness about the NBA and the way it was done. The NBA is in trouble. Big trouble.”

His comment immediately became part of the wider GOAT debate that never seems to fade. It was one of many times a public figure outside of basketball offered an opinion on a question that fans have argued over for decades.

Jordan and LeBron have been compared in every possible way. Jordan is remembered for six NBA titles, 10 scoring titles, and unmatched success on the biggest stage.

LeBron is praised for his versatility, longevity, and ability to carry teams through multiple eras of the game. Trump’s statement placed him firmly on Jordan’s side of the debate, adding another headline to an argument that has no clear end.

The GOAT conversation continues to evolve

For basketball fans, every era brings new comparisons and stronger opinions. Jordan’s dominance in the 1990s and LeBron’s sustained excellence across two decades keep the discussion alive.

Trump’s words reminded everyone that the debate extends beyond the court, sparking reactions from fans and players alike.

Even years later, that single quote still appears whenever the GOAT question returns to the headlines. No matter who fans believe is the greatest, both players have defined generations of basketball and global competition.

Trump’s take became part of that story, proving once again that when it comes to Michael Jordan and LeBron James, everyone has a side and a reason for picking it.
