Donald Trump listened on as Gary Player delivered a passionate message about fitness, freedom and the sporting opportunities available in America.
The golf legend appeared at the White House as Trump signed a proclamation tied to youth sports and physical fitness. The event was built around restoring the Presidential Fitness Test and pushing young Americans toward healthier habits.
Player, who has spent decades around presidents and elite athletes, used the moment to speak directly about the next generation.
And Trump appeared to nod along as the 90-year-old outlined why he believes sport can still shape America’s future.

Gary Player praises Donald Trump while stressing youth fitness
Speaking via The White House on X, Player praised Trump before turning the focus to young athletes.
“I’ve been around almost every president for the last 65 years. They all did great works but I’ve never seen a president who loves the country as much as you do,” Player said.
He added, “The youth of a nation are the trustees of posterity. These are the people that are going to be the future champions. And when I talk, I always talk about the importance of fitness.”
The comments came during a White House event focused on bringing back the Presidential Physical Fitness Award, a school-based program meant to encourage competition, exercise, and youth health.
The event also featured Bryson DeChambeau, who serves as chair of the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition, and even took part in a push-up contest with Player.
Gary Player says freedom and fitness create an ‘only in America’ opportunity
Player then expanded his message beyond sports, stating, “I say to the young people, just love this country because you don’t realize what’s going on around the world.
“There is a silent war taking place against America today, and what we’ve got to do is make these kids realize that freedom, exercise, and education start with reading some books.”
“What you put in your body is so important. What a wonderful job [Trump] has done. And to all your Cabinet members, I say thank you for maintaining this great word—this cherished word: freedom,” he concluded.
The broader theme was that young Americans should not take opportunity for granted. Player framed fitness, education and patriotism as connected, arguing that future champions are shaped as much by discipline and habits as by talent.
That message fit the purpose of the event, with Trump using the occasion to promote youth sports ahead of major events being held in the U.S., including the 2026 FIFA World Cup and future Olympics.
Player’s “only in America” message also leaned on his belief that the country gives young athletes a rare platform to chase success through sport.
