Sunderland look to have missed out on former Leeds United boss Garry Monk to Middlesbrough.

Don Hutchison has suggested that Sunderland should have gone out and appointed Garry Monk following his exit from Leeds United.

Sunderland have been looking for a new manager for weeks, following David Moyes’ resignation.

However, they appear to have missed out in the race to appoint Monk.

The 38-year-old is all set to take over at Middlesbrough (BBC Sport), after impressing the board at the Riverside Stadium.

And Hutchison has suggested that Sunderland have missed a trick by not appointing the former Leeds man.

Monk shocked Leeds by leaving at the end of the season, but he earned a great amount of credit for the job he did at Elland Road.

Monk guided Leeds into seventh place in the Championship table over the past campaign.

Monk’s task at Middlesbrough will be to guide them to an immediate promotion back to the Premier League.

Sunderland, meanwhile, are still looking for a new boss – with Kevin Phillips, Derek McInnes and Nigel Pearson among the favourites.
