Don Hutchison has told the Weekend Review he sees a bit of Luis Suarez in new Liverpool star Luis Diaz. The Reds recruit opened his account on Saturday, and Hutchison says he sees a similar aggression to Suarez in Diaz.
Diaz, 25, was played through on goal by Jordan Henderson on Saturday afternoon. Liverpool needed a third goal to kill off any remaining Norwich hope, with the scoreline reading 2-1. Diaz showed enormous composure.
Simultaneously dealing with the pressure of his first, proper golden chance in a Liverpool shirt – and the need of a third goal – he dinked a delightful left-footed chip over the on-rushing Norwich stopper Angus Gunn.
A gorgeous finish that earned the biggest roar of the day from the Anfield crowd. Hutchison spoke on Monday about Diaz, saying he sees Suarez in Diaz – and predicted the Colombian to have a fight with someone, soon.
“I see a little bit of Suarez in him, I see him in a couple of weeks time having a fight with someone. I think he has got it in him,” Hutchison told the Weekend Review, as broadcasted on Australian outlet Optus Sport.
Hutchison on Diaz: Do Liverpool have their new Suarez?
That tenacity and aggression that Suarez showed in a Reds shirt is certainly there. Is the same level of quality? Well, if Diaz is even 70% as good as Suarez, he will be a wonderful signing for the Merseyside club.
Suarez scored an incredible 82 goals in 133 games for Liverpool – and just as impressively, laid on 47 assists. A Liverpool icon, even if he did only stay at Anfield for three and a half seasons. Diaz will want to emulate him.
There are similarities and under Jurgen Klopp, Diaz can thrive. But first of all, he will have to displace Sadio Mane and Mo Salah – by no means, an easy task. Both, though, remain on contracts that only run until June 2023.
