Don Hutchison has told Bwin Sport that he almost joined Rangers once upon a time.

The former Scotland international had a prolific career in English football which included spells at nine different clubs – including two at West Ham United.

He rejoined the Hammers in 2001 after a year-long stint at Sunderland, but the 45-year-old claims he had the option to join the Gers rather than return to East London.

However, Hutchison, in an interview with Bwin Sport, says that he does regret not joining Dick Advocaat’s side, who had Champions League football at the time.

“I very nearly signed for Rangers after I left Sunderland. I was so close to going there, but I just felt the draw of going back to West Ham and the Premier League – where I had a bit of unfinished business – so I moved back to London.

“Dick Advocaat was in charge and Champions League football was on offer, so I do regret not going. Although he was more into his cricket, my dad was a Rangers fan, so I think he would have enjoyed it too.

“They’re a great club and it’s great for Scottish football that they’re back in the Premiership. “

Adovcaat, who won two Premiership titles, left Rangers midway through the 2001-02 season as the Gers trailed Celtic by 12 points. The Blues had to wait until 2003 to win another league crown so it remains to be seen if Hutchison would have won anything during his time in Glasgow.

He would spend a further four years at West Ham, but much of his return was decimated by injury and being out of favour under various managers.
