Liverpool are expected to seek alternatives to the Southampton defender.
Former Liverpool midfielder Don Hutchison
Former Liverpool midfielder Don Hutchison has identified the player to whom the Reds should turn instead of Virgil van Dijk.
Liverpool were reported to have agreed terms with the Southampton defender, but released a statement on Wednesday in which they apologised for “any misunderstanding” and announced they had ended their interest, as the Premier League prepared to investigate a possible illegal approach.

Jurgen Klopp’s side are now expected to turn to alternatives, having conceded the most goals of any top four club this past Premier League campaign.
And when asked on Twitter to name his preferred choice, Hutchison replied:
Tah is a player who should be well known to Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, having made his Bundesliga breakthrough while the 49-year-old was in charge of Borussia Dortmund.
And the 21-year-old, who has been capped three times by Germany’s national team, was linked with a move to Anfield at the turn of the year.

Physically, at least, Tah, could be the perfect Van Dijk alternative, although he is significantly less experienced than the Southampton player.
Should Liverpool move for Leverkusen’s Jonathan Tah after ending interest in Virgil van Dijk of Southampton?
