Don Hutchison has claimed that Tottenham Hotspur’s midfield partnership between Harry Winks and Moussa Sissoko doesn’t work following their defeat to Newcastle on Sunday.

Whilst some of the talk will be about Christian Eriksen, Davinson Sanchez or Spurs’ defence as a whole, Hutchinson was critical of Tottenham’s midfield.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side have started the season in a poor fashion – they narrowly beat Aston Villa on the opening day, they were outperformed during their 2-2 draw at Manchester City last week and now they have tasted their first defeat.

Former Everton and West Ham midfielder Hutchison stated that Spurs ‘never really looked like scoring’ during their defeat to Newcastle.

“No surprise the possession stats are heavy but no shots on target, they never really looked like scoring,” Hutchison told Sport Optus.

“When you look at Tottenham it’s strange to try and analyse where they are here, where they were 18 months ago, I thought they were stronger. You look in midfield now, I don’t think Winks and Sissoko are a good partnership.”

Tanguy Ndombele, who joined Spurs in the summer, has started the previous games but he was absent for the Newcastle clash.

Perhaps Spurs’ midfield is missing Christian Eriksen, who has only started one Premier League match this season, but his future is in doubt.

There’s no doubt that Tottenham are missing that spark or something different in the middle of the park as they start the season with four points from their opening three matches.
