Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes earned praise from Don Hutchison as the Magpies won 5-1 at West Ham United on Wednesday night.

The 25-year-old helped himself to two assists as Eddie Howe’s charges ran riot at the London Stadium.

Newcastle didn’t need long to take the lead, opening the scoring against David Moyes’ side after just six minutes.

Allan Saint-Maximin crossed in for the unmarked Callum Wilson to head home with ease.

Just six minutes later, Joelinton made it two for Newcastle.

The 26-year-old made a run from deep after being found through the middle by Fabian Schar.

Joelinton duly rounded the goalkeeper and slotted the ball into an empty Hammers net.

Although the Brazilian’s effort was flagged, VAR showed he was onside.

A Newcastle error went on to give the Hammers a way back into the game on 37 minutes.

Kurt Zouma scored with a header from close range after Nick Pope tried to punch away a Jarrod Bowen corner.

However, Newcastle went on to restore their two-goal lead shortly after the restart, before adding two more late on.

Some poor defending by Nayef Aguerd enabled Jacob Murphy to claim the ball and square for Wilson to tap home.

Alexander Isak then made the most of a poor Lukasz Fabianski clearance to loft the ball over the goalkeeper.

Finally, Joelinton drove into the hosts’ area and, with plenty of time and space, drilled a shot inside the far post.

‘I never saw this result coming’

Guimaraes’ assist earned praise from Hutchison on the Premier League website.

“What about this pass from Bruno Guimaraes, right into the path of Joelinton,” he said.

“I never saw this result coming, and David Moyes is going to be a man under pressure tonight.

“You can’t lose 5-1 at home, not in this manner.”

Newcastle have enjoyed an outstanding season and will fancy their chances of a top-four place.

And Guimaraes is likely to have a big say in the Magpies’ bright future.
