Don Hutchison has said on Premier League Productions that he was “stunned” that some Liverpool fans would have been happy to see Georginio Wijnaldum leave at the end of last season.
The former Liverpool midfielder has raved about Wijnaldum and has outlined his attributes.
The Netherlands international midfielder is out of contract at the Reds at the end of the season, and no new deal is in place at the moment.
Hutchison has said that he was listening to radio phone-ins last season, and he was surprised that some Liverpool fans were happy for the club to sell the 30-year-old in the summer of 2020.
The Scotsman said on Premier League Productions: “I don’t know why Gini does not get any love. I don’t, honestly. I was listening to radio phone-ins last year, and Liverpool fans, if they were going to lose a player, they were saying, ‘Well, it could be Gini to move on because he has not signed a new deal’, and I was just sitting there stunned, listening, thinking, ‘He offers things that other midfield players can’t do’. He is durable. He is never injured. He has played every single minute this season. He could play right-back, he could play centre-half. He never gives the ball away. He goes box-to-box very easy. He is as strong as you like.”
Important player for Liverpool
Wijnaldum has been on the books of Liverpool since 2016 when he joined from Newcastle United and has been a consistent figure in the team.
The Netherlands international midfielder played his role in Liverpool winning the Premier League title and the Champions League over the past two seasons.
The 30-year-old is playing regularly for the Reds at the moment and remains a key figure in the team.
According to WhoScored, Wijnaldum has made nine starts and one substitute appearance in the Premier League and has made four starts and one substitute appearance in the Champions League for Liverpool so far this season.
