Former West Ham United midfielder Don Hutchinson has been discussing the latest transfer news from his old club.
The Hammers have completed some very good business this summer already.
Slaven Bilic has brought in experienced defender Pablo Zabaleta to solve his problem right back position, England goalkeeper Joe Hart, Marko Arnautovic, striker Javier Hernandez and young prospect Saed Haksabanovic.
But with a net spend of just £10 million so far, there is speculation the Hammers are far from done in the window.
And reports claim the East Londoners have launched a club record £26m move for Sporting Lisbon and Portugal midfield star William Carvalho, as reported by the Daily Mail.
The story has since been confirmed by a number of reliable football journalists both in England and Portugal with the general consensus being that Carvalho will be allowed to leave once his club have negotiated their Champions League qualifier.
The 25-year-old – who was a key figure in helping Portugal win the European Championships last summer – has been denied a move to the Premier League before now as Sporting have always proved notoriously difficult to negotiate with.
But West Ham are said to be confident of closing out a deal.
The move has captured the imagination of West Ham fans who are excited by the news, if somewhat dubious as to whether they can get it over the line.
And now Hutchinson, who played for the Hammers in two separate spells, has delivered his verdict on Twitter.
“What a signing this could be for West Ham United, powerhouse of a centre midfielder,” Hutchinson said.
Hutchinson works as a pundit covering European football so will know more than most what Carvalho produces on a weekly basis for his club.
While the Premier League will be a new test for the Angolan born star, West Ham have Carvalho’s international compatriots Jose Fonte and Domingos Quina in East London to help the midfielder settle in.
