Don Goodman offers verdict on Liverpool’s Rhian Brewster

Pundit Don Goodman has told Sky Sports that he thinks Liverpool striker Rhian Brewster should spend another season away from Anfield.

Brewster has been tipped for a huge future for some time now, but the chances haven’t really been there for him at Liverpool.

The 20-year-old – formerly of Chelsea – has only made three first-team appearances for Liverpool. After all, it’s difficult to break into Liverpool’s trophy-hunting side.

In January, Liverpool decided to loan Brewster out. They sent him to the Championship with Swansea City, coached by Brewster’s former England youth boss Steve Cooper.

Before the global pandemic hit, Brewster had shown promise with the Swans. Four goals in his first 11 league games showed that Brewster can be a goalscorer in the second tier.

Soon, all parties will have a decision to make. Will Liverpool want to keep him or loan him out? Do Swansea want him back? Would Brewster like to stay in South Wales?

Now, pundit Goodman has suggested that Brewster is at a critical point in his development. At 20, he needs to be playing, and Goodman doesn’t think he’ll get that chance at Liverpool any time soon.

Goodman noted that Liverpool’s interest in Timo Werner shows that Brewster isn’t quite ready yet, and should go back to Swansea for next season too.

“I think this is an important stage of his development,” said Goodman. “You’re talking about Liverpool, so you are talking about the champions-elect of the Premier League, champions of Europe – you are talking about one of the best teams in the world and you are talking about the plethora of talent they have at their disposal. They are constantly linked with Timo Werner, who is a terrific player.”

“Yes, he’s a talented young man but I personally think that another season in the Championship – probably with Swansea who play a style that suits him where he’s already familiar – would do him good. If he stays at Swansea and can maybe pick up 15-20 Championship goals next season, I think that would be the best plan for him,” he added.
