Aston Villa signed Tyrone Mings from Premier League side Bournemouth in January.
Don Goodman has claimed that Tyrone Mings has had ‘just as big’ of an influence on Aston Villa than Jack Grealish has had on the club in recent months.
Dean Smith’s side will be preparing for the Championship play-off final on Monday as they have a chance of returning to the Premier League following a three-year absence.
In February, following their defeat at home to West Brom, Villa’s season looked down and out, but the return of Grealish at the start of March saw the club go on a 10-game winning run and end the season in the top-six.
Many have pointed towards Grealish’s return as the reason why Villa find themselves in this current position, but speaking on the EFL Preview Show on Sky Sports Football (25/05/2019 at 1:30 pm), Goodman believes Mings also deserves credit.
On Mings and Abraham signings: “You can’t give Tammy Abraham enough credit for scoring so many goals in the Championship when you come on loan,” Goodman told Sky Sports Football. “That means you have to settle straightaway and you have got to understand the club ethos and he’s done that wonderfully well.
“People talk about Jack Grealish and him coming back to fitness. For me, Tyrone Mings was just as big because they were leaking goals for fun during the first half of the season. I think his signings, in particular, has been one of the massive factors in Aston Villa doing so well.”
Centre-back Mings signed for Villa during the January transfer window from Premier League side Bournemouth. Initially, he joined a team that was struggling to win games and leaking goals for fun.
But in recent months, Villa have kept clean sheets against the likes of Derby, Middlesbrough, Birmingham City and Millwall, as well as beating Nottingham Forest, Sheffield Wednesday and Blackburn to name a few.
Now, Mings and his Villa teammates are one game away from doing the unthinkable with their team and guiding them back to the promised land.
