Leeds United booked their place in the fourth round of the FA Cup with a narrow 2-1 victory over Cambridge United on Monday night, but they now face a wait to find out who their opponents will be.

But while that is uncertain until AFC Wimbledon and Sutton United meet in their third round replay later this month, one thing that is surely guaranteed is that two Dons stars will have additional motivation to ensure that Leeds are travelling to Kingsmeadow for a place in the last 16.

Dominic Poleon and Tom Elliott have both been shining for the League One side this season, having each scored seven goals for Neal Ardley’s men. And their form is not the only thing they have in common.

Both forwards began their professional careers at Elland Road, and perhaps it could be argued that both men left the club with unfinished business.

Of the pair, Elliott was further from cementing himself as a first-team player for the Whites as he made just three league appearances for the club, and none between 2007 and his departure in 2011.

On the other hand, Poleon showed more signs that he had the potential to make an impact at Leeds. Although his record of three goals in 29 league games is not overly impressive on paper, the fact that he made just three starts and was often deployed in a wider role means that it is much more understandable that United fans feel that he was let go too early when Oldham signed him in 2014.

And the fact that Poleon could have the chance to prove exactly why he still had a role to play does not appear to have escaped the forward’s attention as he took to Twitter after the draw was made and before Leeds saw off Cambridge.

And the pair will be hoping that they can find their best form in their upcoming replay as it may give them the chance to prove to their former club that they were wrong to give up on them when they did.
