Dominic Matteo has suggested on BBC Radio Leeds that it will be tough for Leeds United to hold onto their best players beyond the summer transfer window.

The former Leeds star has also warned that West Yorkshire outfit against cashing in on their best players given that they have failed to clinch promotion to the Premier League.

Matteo has added that he hopes that the Whites are able to retain the services of head coach Marcelo Bielsa for next season.

Matteo said on BBC Radio Leeds: “Hopefully we can keep hold of the manager because I think he is a good manager. And also, keep hold of our good young players. That’s going to be a task this summer.

“We have got some incredible young players. The Under-23s are winning stuff. You have got to be careful now – now that we have missed out, we don’t go getting rid of all of our best assets. Got to hold on to and rebuild.”

Building on 2018-19 season

Not many will have expected Leeds to finish third in the Championship this season, and Bielsa must be hailed for getting the best out of the players he inherited when he was appointed the club’s head coach in the summer of 2018.

The Elland Road faithful will be bitterly disappointed that the team failed to reach the Championship playoff final, but they must be optimistic about the 2019-20 campaign.

If Bielsa stays in charge and if he is given transfer funds to spend on the players he wants, then Leeds could compete again for automatic promotion in 2019-20.
