Dominic Calvert-Lewin should consider short-term Everton future

Should Dominic Calvert-Lewin consider leaving Everton on loan?

It was less than two weeks ago when Everton boss Ronald Koeman told the club’s official website that he is ‘counting’ on striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin this season.

He said: “He is one of our young players. It is all about productivity that we need and of course I will count on him this season.

“It’s all about training and performances. We need competition and it’s good that he is providing that.”

Fast forward 13 days and it would appear as if Koeman has had second thoughts on the 20-year-old striker, after telling The Guardian that he wants to sign another striker.

Whoever he signs, it’s likely to push Calvert-Lewin further down the pecking order at Goodison Park this season and the young marksman should consider leaving on loan.

The former Sheffield United striker, a £1.5 million signing last summer according to The Daily Mail, remains a brilliant prospect but it would appear as if his short-term future on Merseyside looks rather bleak.

Staying at Everton this season doesn’t make a lot of sense for his ongoing development, when he could be playing every week for perhaps a Championship club, rather than spearhead the Under-23s attack on Merseyside.

At his age, he needs games and although Koeman has suggested he could get them with him, the reality is that he isn’t ready for the senior side, evident by his performance in a 2-2 draw with Sevilla before the season started.

One season away on loan could do wonders for him and Koeman would really know whether he can depend on him or not next season.
