Everton’s new striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin has told the Liverpool Echo that Mason Holgate’s development made a move to Goodison Park appealing.
Whilst Everton missed out on a host of targets on deadline day, they did snap up two forwards, with West Ham United’s Enner Valencia penning a season-long loan deal with the club.
The other player to arrive was fellow attacker Calvert-Lewin, who signed a four-year contract after completing a move from League One side Sheffield United.

The 19-year-old attacker, who scored on his England Under-20 debut against Brazil on Sunday, arrives having been tipped for a bright future with hometown club Sheffield United.
Having hit eight goals in 26 games on loan for Northampton Town last season, Calvert-Lewin caught the eye of Premier League clubs, with Everton completing a deal for him just days after the Daily Mail had linked him with a move to Manchester United.

Calvert-Lewin will start out in the Everton development squad, but he doesn’t have to look very far for inspiration, as Mason Holgate has become a key member of Ronald Koeman’s first-team setup.
Holgate also made the move from Yorkshire to Merseyside by leaving Barnsley for Everton last summer, and whilst he was on the fringes of the first-team last season, he’s become an important player under Koeman so far this season.
Striker Calvert-Lewin has told the Liverpool Echo that Holgate’s development helped him decide on his move, as the opportunities given to young players made it a ‘no-brainer’ to join Everton.

“It was a no-brainer for me,” said Calvert-Lewin. “You only have to look at the chance that’s given to youth here and the opportunities that have been given. The players that are in there now, you look at Mason Holgate, and that’s something that appeals to me as a 19-year-old player.”
“You can’t ask for more than that. Obviously, your hard work pays off and I’m just looking for a chance to impress and show what I can do,” he added.
