Tottenham Hotspur talent Harry Winks was called into the England squad last night as a replacement for the injured Fabian Delph.

It is the first time the Spurs midfielder has been capped at senior level and it is a reward for a terrific year which has seen him promoted from his club’s under-23 side to the first team.

His call up impressed his former Spurs academy colleague Dominic Ball, who hailed the ‘well deserved’ recognition for his pal – even though he is surprised at how soon it has happened.

Winks only made his first team debut for Tottenham last November and has only started one Premier League game this season.

His progress was hampered by an ankle injury last April which saw him miss the final weeks of last season.

Winks, 21, will now have his sights set on impressing enough to earn a role in England’s World Cup squad.

If he continues to progress at the rate he has over the past year, then it should be nailed on.
