Dominic Ball has told the Sunday Mail that he is shocked to see former club Rangers now have a different manager in charge following the success they enjoyed during his season with the Gers under Mark Warburton.

In Warburton’s first season with the Light Blues – the campaign that Ball spent on loan at Ibrox – Rangers secured promotion back to the Scottish Premiership and reached the Scottish Cup final after beating Celtic in a dramatic semi-final.

However, the return to the top flight has been a lot less spectacular than the fans would have hoped with Rangers failing to make any kind of title charge.

That led to Warburton moving on – in seemingly bizarre circumstances – back in February with Pedro Caixinha eventually being given the job.

But despite the side’s struggles, Ball has insisted that he is surprised to see what has transpired at the club this season.

“A year down the line I’m shocked Rangers have a new manager in place,” he told the Mail.

“Mark was quality. For whatever reason it hasn’t worked out this year. But with my experience around the players and staff at that time I couldn’t see anything but success for them.”

Regardless of the circumstances that led to Warburton’s exit, many fans would probably argue that his departure from Ibrox was probably the right move for both the club and the manager himself.

It was starting to appear that Warburton was being proven to be the wrong person for Rangers after a poor summer window and a disappointing first few months back at the highest level.

But Ball appears to believe that Warburton would have still been capable of helping Rangers close the gap to Celtic at the top of the table at some stage had he stuck around.
