Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing Domingos Duarte from Granada in the summer transfer window, accordion to IDEAL.
What’s the story?
IDEAL have reported that Tottenham are planning to make a bid of €10 million (£8.59m) for Duarte.
However, the Portugal international central defender’s release clause is €30 million (£25.75m).
So, it remains to be seen if La Liga outfit Granada would be willing to sell the 26-year-old for one third of his release clause.
The report in IDEAL has claimed that it is Tottenham head coach Nuno who is behind the North London club’s interest in Duarte.
Nuno wants to play a back-three system at Spurs like he did at Wolverhampton Wanderers, and he wants alternatives.
Would Duarte make Tottenham better?
Duarte is a very good centre-back who has played twice for the Portugal national football team already.
The 26-year-old has established himself as a key figure at Granada and has done well for the Spanish club since joining in 2019.
The centre-back made 27 starts in La Liga and eight starts in the Europa League last season, and made 34 starts in the league in 2019-20.
Tottenham have already signed Cristian Romero this summer, and a player like Duarte is only going to make the Premier League club better defensively.
Cristiano Ronaldo admiration
What is very interesting about Duarte is that he wants to have a mentality like his Portugal international teammate and Juventus forward Cristiano Ronaldo.
We all know just how good Ronaldo is and how even at the age of 36 he is banging in the goals for fun.
Duarte is a defender and is 10 years younger than Ronaldo, but he still looks up to the former Manchester United and Real Madrid star.
News18 quoted Duarte as saying in November 2019: “He (Ronaldo) has the mentality like no one.
“To maintain yourself at the top for so many years like Cristiano does, it’s very difficult.
“Cristiano has talent but his main quality is his mentality. He is still willing to learn. That’s what I see from outside.”
