Dominic Matteo paid tribute to the late Gary Speed on Twitter after Leeds United secured a 1-0 win over Reading at Elland Road on Tuesday night, thanks to Stuart Dallas’ second-half strike.

Tuesday marked the seventh anniversary of Leeds icon Speed’s death. He played 312 times in all competitions for Leeds’ senior side after coming through the ranks at Elland Road, and is considered a Leeds legend on the terraces.

Versatile star Dallas popped up with the all-important winner, but it was his Northern Ireland teammate Bailey Peacock-Farrell who took the glory as he saved an 89th-minute penalty from Marc McNulty.

Ex-Leeds and Liverpool defender Matteo posted on Twitter after the match, stating the win was “well deserved” and a “big three points” with Speed watching on from above.

The win sees Leeds move into second place, after Middlesbrough drew 1-1 with Preston North End. Norwich City also drew away at struggling Hull City, meaning Leeds win is all the more sweeter.

Kemar Roofe, Samu Saiz and Pablo Hernandez all had chances to score themselves but could not find the back of the net, before Peacock-Farrell produced a marvellous penalty stop after Barry Douglas had fouled Josh Sims.

Leeds next face a hugely difficult clash in the form of a trip to local rivals Sheffield United at Bramall Lane, in what is a lunchtime kick-off against Chris Wilder’s Blades.

Stuart Dallas of Leeds United greets fans as he arrives for the Sky Bet Championship match between Leeds United and Bristol City at Elland Road on November 24, 2018 in Leeds, England.
