Garry Monk’s claim that there is ‘nothing clinically wrong’ with Tom Lees has prompted a strong reaction from some Sheffield Wednesday supporters.

Lees has failed to feature in any of Wednesday’s three league games following the restart, last appearing in a 5-0 defeat at Brentford back in March.

But Monk told Yorkshire Live on Friday that the Owls’ club captain was due to start the midweek loss at home to West Bromwich Albion, before withdrawing from the starting eleven.

“When we did the preparations for the WBA game on Tuesday, he was starting and then two minutes into it he said he felt something in his hamstring,” explained the Sheffield Wednesday manager, Monk.

“We scanned him straight away and there was nothing on the scan at all and that came back clear.

“We will just be dictated by Tom and how he feels. Tom will decide when he feels he can come back in. Clinically, there is nothing wrong on that scan. We will see him this morning if he is able to train. There is nothing clinical to rule him out from training or playing.

“Obviously, he has feeling in his hamstring and we will be dictated by how he feels.”

Lees’ decision, which saw Moses Odubajo brought into an unfamiliar role at left-centre-back, arrived shortly after news that some of Wednesday’s players are missing payments from the club.

And the conspiracy theorists are out in force on Twitter, with many of the following fans unconvinced by the 29-year-old’s alleged claim.

Lees, who is thought to be one of Sheffield Wednesday’s highest-earning players, has a year left to run on his contract at Hillsborough.

The Owls have already made significant cuts to their wage bill ahead of the new campaign, which they could yet begin as a League One side, with Steven Fletcher, Fernando Forestieri, Sam Hutchinson, Sam Winnall and Morgan Fox each released this week.
