Leeds United were beaten by Manchester City on Wednesday evening.

The Whites headed into that game knowing that they were underdogs, but if any team enjoys upsetting the odds against a giant, it’s Leeds.

Indeed, the Yorkshire club have won just four league games this season, and two of those have been against Chelsea and Liverpool, so there was a feeling that a result against City could’ve been on the cards. After all, they did beat them 2-1 here in 2021 despite only having 10 men.

Unfortunately though, it wasn’t to be this time around, and after the game fans began to discuss the importance of this result, with some seeing this as a ‘free hit’ against a team that is one of the best in the world.

Of course, no professional should ever go into a game seeing it as a free hit. After all, anything can happen in football and if you’re defeated before you even kick-off, what’s the point of playing?

However, there’s seemingly one man at Leeds who doesn’t quite see things that way – Andrea Radrizzani.

After the game the Leeds owner liked a tweet that stated that the result didn’t really matter due to the fact the Whites weren’t expected to win.

Now, we can’t say for sure that Radrizzani liked this tweet because he agrees, but if he does, he’s completely missing the point of what this club is meant to be about.

Leeds have always been the team to upset the apple cart. This is the club that went to Anfield and won against all odds just two months ago, this is the club that ended Arsenal’s title hopes in 2003 by virtue of a Mark Viduka goal when they were on the brink of relegation – this is the club that appointed Marcelo Bielsa for goodness sake.

This idea that games against the big clubs, especially at home, don’t matter is ridiculous. If Leeds had adopted that attitude and let Liverpool and Chelsea walk over them they’d be bottom of the league right now.

Luckily, it seems as though this attitude hasn’t filtered down into the manager or the squad, but if Radrizzani does truly feel this way he needs to have a rethink.
