Jamie Redknapp believes that Trent Alexander-Arnold looks a different player to the one that helped Liverpool to a Champions League and Premier League title in recent years.

Still only 22, Alexander-Arnold has established himself as one of the world’s best right-backs in recent years.

But like a lot of Liverpool players this season, his form has dropped in a big way.

On Thursday night, Chelsea looked to target him in their 1-0 win at Anfield and he didn’t exactly cover himself in glory for Mason Mount’s decisive strike.

Alexander-Arnold was brilliant in the victory over Sheffield United six days ago, but this was another backwards step that seems to symbolise his entire season.

And former Liverpool midfielder Redknapp has claimed that the England international is ‘well off it’ this season.

Redknapp told Sky Sports: “Trent Alexander-Arnold was the best right-back in the country last year but this year, he’s well off it. His levels defensively and his energy… he doesn’t look the same player.”

One goal and three assists from 25 Premier League games backs up Redknapp’s point.

A right-back can’t be expected to score goals, but Alexander-Arnold did create them for fun and has set up 31 in his past two seasons prior to this campaign.

Form is temporary and class is permanent, as the old adage goes, but it is quite worrying from a Liverpool perspective nonetheless.
