Jamie Carragher has claimed that Salomon Rondon’s challenge on Tomas Soucek during West Ham’s 1-0 win at Everton ‘doesn’t look great’ but it was ‘accidental’, as he told Super Sunday on Sky Sports.
In the 74th minute, both Soucek and Rondon were tussling for the ball on the halfway line, with the Everton forward winning the battle of power between the two.
The West Ham midfielder ended up on the floor when Rondon won the ball, with the Everton striker then controlling the situation and running into the oppositions half.
But as he was about to accelerate away from Soucek, his back heal ended up catching him in the face and his bloodied face was treated on the field.
Soucek had to go off, with the Hammers holding onto their lead and securing all three points.
But Carragher made it clear that Rondon’s challenge is something that looks a lot worse than it was.
“He was rolling around holding his face,” said Carragher. “I think he was saying ‘there was a collision with Rondon’.
“Whether he stood on him as he tried to get away from him. I think it was accidental as he tried to get away from him, I think.
“The ball got tangled up (as they challenged for the ball). He just catches him.
“It doesn’t look great. But I think it’s accidental. He is just trying to get away. The ball gets tangled up and he uses his body strength. He’s not looking and he doesn’t know where he is. It always looks worse in slow motion.”

It was three points for David Moyes against his former club and the Hammers moving into the European places, alongside today’s opponents.
Even though some would have questioned whether West Ham could build on the success of last season, they are showing no signs of slowing down and they will be hoping to charge towards those Champions League places.
The same can be said for Everton, even though their 100% home record ended today, because at the start of the season, their fans would have taken 14 points from eight games.
Perhaps the style in which they lost will worry supporters, but at the end of the day, they knew from the get-go that Rafa Benitez is a defensive-minded coach.
