Does West Ham United’s revival prove Sunderland fans got things horribly wrong over David Moyes?
West Ham have turned a corner under Moyes of late taking seven points from games against Chelsea, Arsenal and Stoke City to propel themselves out of the bottom three while Sunderland find themselves in a battle to stay in the Championship.
When Moyes was appointed there was a lot of apathy – but no lack of support – from West Ham fans and anger towards the club’s owners David Sullivan and David Gold.
Much of that was down to his perceived failings in his recent jobs, particularly Sunderland, who went down without so much of a fight last season.
Black Cats fans never took to Moyes and castigated him for his negative outlook from the off at the Stadium of Light while others saw it as being realistic about the challenge he had managing a sinking ship.
Sunderland supporters were quick to offer Hammers fans a damning assessment of Moyes when he took over last month, telling them they had just sealed their relegation fate among other things.
But in East London Moyes has been bullish and positive and it has showed on the pitch with improved performances, organisation, discipline and fitness.
Much of that is down to the fact he knows he has an infinitely better squad and more talented players to work with at West Ham than he was lumbered with in the North East.
With that comes a realistic hope of success.
Wins over Chelsea and Stoke have breathed new life into the campaign and with a winnable run of fixtures coming up the Hammers could well be comfortable in midtable by the new year.
The turnaround proves that Moyes was right in his own brutally honest appraisal that he should never have taken the Sunderland job.
He was hounded out of the club and given their struggles in the Championship this season and West Ham’s revival, it is clear the majority were wrong to blame Moyes for many of their ills.
