Both Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur will play in the Champions League next season.
Wayne Rooney recently suggested to The Manchester Evening News that Manchester United have had a better season than Tottenham Hotspur.
While Tottenham finished second in the Premier League this season, United ended up sixth in the table.
The Red Devils, though, won the Europa League and the EFL Cup this campaign, and have qualified for the group stage of next season’s Champions League.
United forward Rooney has suggested that Jose Mourinho’s side have had a better season than Tottenham.
“It’s great to win trophies,” Rooney told The Manchester Evening News. “It’s what you play football for. It’s right to say we want to qualify for the Champions League, but you know, you want to go try and win that trophy.
“Look at Tottenham, they’ve had a fantastic season, finished second, with no trophies to show for it. We’re in the same position, in the Champions League, with two trophies.”
Does Wayne Rooney have a point?
There can be no doubt that Tottenham have had a much better season in the Premier League than United, but Rooney does have a point.
There is no prize for coming second. Spurs will play in the Champions League and so will United, who have also won the EFL Cup.
However, one point that cannot be denied is that Tottenham have progressed as a team over the course of the 2016-17 season, something that United under Mourinho have not.
