Tottenham Hotspur reportedly want another centre-back, but what does that mean for Cameron Carter-Vickers?
Many Tottenham Hotspur fans celebrated the speculation linking them with a £15 million summer move (via The Guardian) for Borussia Dortmund centre-back Matthias Ginter on Wednesday.
One man who might not have been so chuffed by the speculation is Tottenham academy product Cameron Carter-Vickers.
If Ginter is signed then it will make it even tougher for the 19-year-old to make an impact for Spurs next season.
The American defender is already the Lilywhites’ fifth-choice centre-back, stuck behind Jan Vertonghen, Toby Alderweireld, Eric Dier and Kevin Wimmer.
Ginter would not be considered unless Pochettino plans to offload one of those four – likely Wimmer – but it would say a lot for Carter-Vickers if the Argentine got somebody else in rather than promote the youngster.
The teenager remains a fine talent but he struggled in three of the four FA Cup and League Cup matches that he started last season.
What he badly needs is regular football and it will do nothing for his development if he wastes another season on the fringes of Tottenham’s senior set-up.
Pochettino perhaps made a mistake by not loaning him out last term, but Carter-Vickers must spend the 2017-18 campaign away from Spurs because, at the moment, he is just as far away from the big time as he was 12 months ago.
