The World Cup Final takes place on Sunday, but before France face Argentina in the sport’s biggest game, there’s the small matter of the third-place playoff.

Croatia will face off against Morocco for the right to be the third-placed team at this World Cup, and while this isn’t necessarily the most interesting game of the tournament, there is still something on the line here.

Indeed, not only do the winners of this game earn a podium spot at this tournament, they also receive a medal for their efforts if they manage to win Sunday’s match.

Does the World Cup have third-place medals?

Interestingly, much like the Olympic Games, you do earn a bronze medal for finishing third at the World Cup.

It’s a consolation prize, but it will mean a lot for the Moroccan or Croatian players depending on who comes out on top this weekend.

Luka Modric and co have already won a silver medal back in 2018, while Morocco are aiming to become the first African nation to win any sort of medal at a World Cup.

Of course, bronze medals for the third-place team leads to the question as to if the runners-up of the competition get silver medals.

Do the World Cup runners-up get silver medals?

Yes, they do.

In true Olympian fashion, the second-place team at the World Cup earn silver medals with the World Cup insignia engraved on it, while the winners’ earn a gold equivalent.

The silver medals are handed out after the final to the losing team, and with one silver already in his collection, Lionel Messi will be hoping to pick up gold this time around.

Of course, the true prize is the World Cup trophy that is lifted by the winners of Sunday’s final.
