Does Sunderland’s Konstantopoulos interest suggest signing Andy Lonergan would be difficult?

Leeds United goalkeeper Andy Lonergan and Middlesbrough’s Dimitrios Konstantopoulos have been linked with Sunderland in the January transfer window.

Sunderland are interested in signing Dimitrios Konstantopoulos from Middlesbrough in the January transfer window, according to The Northern Echo.

It has been reported that the goalkeeper is high on the list of Sunderland manager Chris Coleman’s transfer wishlist.

The Greek goalkeeper is the second choice at the Black Cats’s Championship rivals Middlesbrough at the moment, and the 39-year-old’s current contract runs out at the end of the season.

The Northern Echo had earlier reported that Sunderland are considering Leeds United goalkeeper Andy Lonergan, and that manager Coleman had made an approach.

Lonergan is 34 years of age and is also the second-choice goalkeeper at Leeds, and the former Wolverhampton Wanderers will be a better long-term signing for Sunderland.

However, the Black Cats’ (reported) interest in the 39-year-old Konstantopoulos suggests that they are looking at alternatives to Lonergan, and that they could find it hard to secure the services of Lonergan from Leeds.

Although the 34-year-old is the second choice at Elland Road, Leeds do need to keep him in the squad – or at least sign a suitable replacement – as they are aiming to finish in the top six of the Championship this season.
