Former Rangers defender Henning Berg has thrown his hat into the ring to take over at Ibrox.
Henning Berg knows Rangers well, having wound down his storied playing career at Ibrox in 2003/04. He’s also an experienced manager who has coached in four different countries and also won a league title.
Yet, this does not mean reports stating that Berg has thrown his hat in the ring to take over at Rangers have captured the imagination. The Daily Record claim that the 48-year-old has contracted the Scottish giants to make his interest known after they opened their doors to applications.
The fact that Berg has been sacked from each of his last four jobs, however, means that few Rangers fans are clamouring for the club to take a serious look in his direction.
Sacked, sacked, sacked and sacked
At the end of last season, Berg was given his marching orders by Hungarian side Videoton after he lost the league title on the final day of the season to Honved. If that can be considered a little harsh, Berg was also dismissed by Legia Warsaw just weeks into the 2015/16 season with the club second in the league – a few months after leading them to the Ekstraklasa title.
But let’s not forget the former Manchester United defender’s short-lived spell at his old employers Blackburn Rovers. Working under the reign of the trigger happy Venky’s, Berg was in charge for just 57 days and won one of his ten games in charge.
And, in his job before that ill-fated stint at Ewood Park, Berg at least lasted three years at Lillestrom – though a 31 per cent win ratio hardly sets the world alight.
Sacked four times in a row, Berg knows better than most just how unforgiving the world of football management can be. Thus, he will be more than aware of the task that potentially awaits him at a Rangers side with high expectations but little means of bridging the gap to Old Firm rivals Celtic.
