Is Ben Mee the Burnley defender Everton should have signed last summer and not Michael Keane as Spurs show interest in the former?

Tottenham Hotspur are considering making a move for Ben Mee this summer, according to the Sun, as the defender approaches the final year of his current contract with Burnley.

Mee has been in impressive form for the Clarets this season and it’s thought the Lancashire side would be open to selling the 28-year-old if their £20m asking price is met.

Everton kicking themselves?

It could be argued that Mee is one of the most underrated players in the Premier League currently, captaining his team to the fourth best defensive record in the entire division in 2017/18.

Despite Sean Dyche’s men finishing 16th it was also a similar story last season, with only the top ten and Middlesbrough conceding fewer goals than Burnley.

It was on the back of that form that Everton signed Michael Keane from Turf Moor for £30m (BBC), but the centre-back has struggled since making the switch to Merseyside and has been greatly criticised for his performances throughout the campaign.

Does that suggest then that perhaps Mee, and not Keane, was the reason behind the resolve at the back under Dyche and maybe the Toffees should have made a move for the former England Under-21 international rather than his defensive partner?
