Rangers are reportedly after Alex Gilliead following his release by Newcastle United.
Rangers are reportedly interested in young winger Alex Gilliead who has recently become a free agent following his release by Premier League side Newcastle United – but that could spell the end for a transfer-listed Gers star.
The Evening Chronicle claimed 22-year-old Gilliead decided to reject a contract at Newcastle in order to pursue a different path in his professional career, after failing to make a single appearance for Rafa Benitez’s senior side.

The report claims that Rangers are interested in landing the five-time England Under-20 international, as well as a whole host of Championship and League One clubs from England.
Gilliead has developed a reputation as being somewhat of a consistent performer in England’s third tier, clocking up 58 appearances for Bradford City in all competitions as well as decent loans with Carlisle United and Luton Town.
Rangers need cover out wide for Jamie Murphy and Daniel Candeias after Steven Gerrard allowed Joe Dodoo and Michael O’Halloran to leave the club.
But the signing of Gilliead could spark the end of a Rangers outcast, namely Harry Forrester, after The Daily Express reported that the 27-year-old is ‘expected’ to leave Ibrox after being thrown on the scrapheap.
Forrester is slightly different to Gilliead in that he can play in the number 10 role, but has been mostly used out wide at Ibrox since his move north of the border in January 2016.
He was ostracised by Pedro Caixinha in the summer of 2017, and was shipped out on loan to League One side AFC Wimbledon where he scored three goals and laid on eight assists.
But surely signing Gilliead would mean Forrester’s already-slim chances of breaking back into the Rangers side would be over, with faith likely to be placed in youth.
