Will Andrew Robertson’s impressive displays for Scotland convince Jurgen Klopp to play him more for Liverpool?

Scotland’s players and fans were left disappointed after a 2-2 draw in Slovenia ended their hopes of qualification for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Victory in Ljubljana could have seen the Scots secure a playoff spot after an impressive turnaround in form during the latter half of the qualifying campaign, giving themselves hope with a 1-0 win over Slovakia in their penultimate game.

One player who came out of that fixture with enormous credit and was named man-of-the-match by the Scotsman was Andrew Robertson, who has been a mainstay in the side during qualification and missed just two games – which were perhaps tellingly their only two defeats.

Aside from becoming an international regular, the one major positive Robertson can take from his displays will be that perhaps it will have made Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp reconsider his selection at left-back.

The 23-year-old has played just three times for the Reds and twice in the Premier League since a summer move from Hull City, with the much criticised Alberto Moreno having generally been preferred.

This is despite the fact that Klopp played James Milner out of position on the left side of defence for large chunks of last season because of question marks over Moreno, yet despite obvious defensive issues with the Spaniard he continues to start.

Yet with the Merseysiders having been weak at the back once again in 2017/18, perhaps it is time for a change of personnel. The two league matches Robertson has played have resulted in a 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace and a 1-1 draw with Burnley, with the Scot showing more defensive awareness than Moreno but with the ability and fitness to break forward at will.
