Leeds continued their busy week in the transfer market on Thursday as the Championship side announced on their official website that Rafa Mujica has signed a three-year deal at Elland Road after being released by Barcelona.

The announcement confirmed that the 20-year-old is expected to start working with the under-23s before pushing towards training with Marcelo Bielsa’s first-team. But given where he has come from and the position he plays in, it is hardly a surprise that there is plenty of excitement surrounding the striker’s future.

Mujica is the kind of player that the Elland Road faithful will be keeping a close eye on. But following the recent Carabao Cup draw, perhaps there is an outside chance that the Leeds fans will have a fantastic opportunity to get a very good look at the forward much sooner than they expect.

Leeds have been drawn against Football League newbies Salford City in mid-August. It is, of course, a game that the Whites would love to win, but it would be no surprise if the competition was low down on Bielsa’s list of priorities.

Bielsa rotated his options in both of the domestic cup competitions last season, and he may well look to do the same again this time around as he knows all too well how beneficial it can be to rest key players when the chance presents itself.

Any rotation may well bring Mujica into contention to play against the League Two side, or at least make the squad for the tie.

The pressure will be off as he has only just arrived at Leeds. But perhaps if he does feature and does manage to make an impact, that permanent promotion into the first-team fold may just come around a little sooner than most expected.
