Newcastle United boss Rafael Benitez has suggested he is focusing on the short-term.

Rolando Aarons may need to be concerned, after Rafael Benitez’s comments about signings he wants at Newcastle United in January.

Aarons has found his first team chances limited this season, with the 22-year-old being handed just two appearances as a substitute.

And Benitez’s latest comments certainly do not seem to suggest he is looking towards the long-term at the moment.

The Spanish boss said, when asked about transfers: “The priority is to stay in the Premier League – not find the next best player for the next 10 years. We must make sure we have what we need to compete.

“We need to have the experience, physicality and quality to improve the team.”

Benitez seems to have some doubts over whether Aarons can help Newcastle in the immediate future.

And, if he is looking simply to keep the Magpies in the Premier League for the time being, then Aarons’ chances could continue to be limited.

There would be a big risk with throwing Aarons into Newcastle’s first team currently, as the youngster lacks experience.

It may, therefore, mean that Aarons has to move in the January transfer window, with interest mounting in the youngster.

The Shields Gazette suggest Aston Villa are keen to snap up the fleet-footed winger, and his departure could provide Benitez with the funds required to buy some players who can immediately impact on his first-team at St. James’ Park.
