Rangers wanted to bring former Ibrox youngster Lewis Morgan back – but Old Firm rivals Celtic appear to be leading the chase.
It should come as no surprise that a left-winger is high on Rangers’ list of priorities in the January transfer window.
The Scottish giants bafflingly sold Barrie McKay to Nottingham Forest in the summer and then promptly failed to replace him – refusing to stump up the £1 million Hearts were demanding for Jamie Walker, according to the Daily Record.
But ahead of the turn of the year, it appears that there is a new name on Rangers’ shortlist – Brighton’s Jamie Murphy.
According to the Scottish Sun, director of football Mark Allen is overseeing transfer policy and the 28-year-old is a player he is very keen on bringing to Ibrox. Murphy, a former Scotland Under-21 star, has barely featured for Brighton in the Premier League and is keen to move on in January.
It is understood that Allen would consider signing Murphy on loan but would rather secure the left winger on a permanent deal. Rangers are reportedly considering a bid of £1.2 million.
But you wonder if Murphy is only their top target now because Lewis Morgan appears set to be heading towards the other side of the city. The 21-year-old St Mirren winger is out of contract at the end of the season and Rangers, who released him as a youngster back in 2013, are allegedly keen to bring him back to Ibrox, per The Sun.
The Scottish Sun, however, claimed recently that Old Firm rivals Celtic are leading the chase. Morgan, who has 10 goals in 22 games for St Mirren this season, would be the latest highly-rated homegrown starlet to pull on the green and white Hoops of Celtic.
So you wonder whether it is a coincidence that, with Morgan edging nearer to Parkhead, Rangers have suddenly stepped up their interest in Murphy.
