The striker produced an impressive cameo appearance for Newcastle against West Bromwich Albion.

Newcastle United showed impressive spirit to come from behind and secure a 2-2 draw away to West Bromwich Albion last night but once again Joselu failed to make a significant impact.

The striker has found the net just twice in the Premier League this season and his barren streak in front of goal has now extended to seven games.

Joselu is certainly capable of holding the ball up well and linking play effectively, but his lack of ruthlessness in terms of finding the net at Premier League level is rather concerning.

Against West Brom, Joselu was replaced by Aleksandar Mitrovic in the 73rd minute and the substitute proceeded to produce a lively performance as he helped Newcastle’s cause.

Mitrovic has barely featured for Newcastle this season, with a three-game suspension for violent conduct earlier in the season not helping his cause.

There has been much speculation about Mitrovic’s future at the club, with the Chronicle saying the Magpies will listen to cash offers for the forward in January. The reality of that is that Mitrovic needs a big month to ensure his future on Tyneside.

The 23-year-old hasn’t exactly been prolific in his time at Newcastle – he scored nine Premier League goals in the 2015/16 campaign and found the net four times in the Championship last season.

However, Mitrovic’s directness and energy can provide Newcastle with an extra edge, while the Serbian also possesses an aerial threat and is strong physically.

It certainly wouldn’t be surprising if Benitez is considering starting Mitrovic instead of Joselu when Newcastle face Chelsea away on Saturday.
