Nottingham Forest had been linked with Edwin Gyasi before Mark Warburton’s sacking on Sunday.
Saturday’s 1-0 victory over Nottingham Forest may prove to be double significant for Sunderland.
Not only did it lift the Black Cats out of the Championship relegation zone, it also spelt the end for Mark Warburton who was sacked by the Tricky Trees following a fourth league game without victory.
Warburton’s dismissal could make Sunderland the favourites to sign Ghana international Edwin Gyasi, who had been tipped as a potential Forest recruit for January according to the Nottingham Post.
However, Warburton’s transfer targets are likely to have gone with him and sporting director Frank McParland, who has also left the City Ground, meaning that Sunderland have one less rival for the Aelsunds winger.
The Daily Mail reports that Gyasi can leave Norway for a fee of around £600,000 with add-ons, which makes him well in Sunderland’s price range as Chris Coleman tries to improve his squad on a budget.
The 26-year-old can also play as a second striker and would ease the goalscoring burden on Lewis Grabban, who has 12 of Sunderland’s 29 league goals this season but has missed the last two matches with injury.
Gyasi has scored six goals and provided four assists for Aelsunds this season.
