Sheffield United are on the verge of signing Oxford’s John Lundstram, so does that end interest in Southend midfielder Ryan Leonard?

Oxford United manager Pep Clotet has all but confirmed that midfielder John Lundstram will be joining Sheffield United in the very near future.

The Oxford Mail reports that the Blades have made a £500,000 offer for the 23-year-old – who has now entered the final year of his current contract at the Kassam Stadium.

“The club tried everything in their hand to keep the player here because he was important for us,” Clotet told the same newspaper.

“But it was clear he was keen on getting this opportunity now, so we respect it.

“If he thinks it’s time to move on then it’s his decision, but obviously he was in the last year of his contract.

“I expect to check all the paperwork tomorrow and hope the deal can be finalised then.”

However, after signing one League One central midfielder, does that end the pursuit of another in the shape of Southend United’s Ryan Leonard?

The Independent reported that United had a £500,000 bid for Leonard rejected by the Shrimpers, resulting in the 25-year-old placing a transfer request with the Essex club.

And now Blades boss Chris Wilder has spoken out once again about his desire to sign the former Plymouth Argyle man, clearly feeling there is space in his squad for both potential new signings.

“Ryan is still a possibility,” Wilder told the Sheffield Star. “We’re still after Ryan. News came out from there, it’s not a secret.

“We’re still in for a few and Ryan is one of them. Loads of names have been mentioned.”

The same report says that Wilder is also considering moves for Ben Reeves – a free agent since leaving MK Dons – and Blackburn Rovers defender Darragh Lenihan.
