The young striker has barely had a look in since arriving at Leeds United.

Lee Erwin celebrates scoring the first goal for Motherwell with Keith Lasley

When Lee Erwin arrived at Leeds United from Motherwell in the summer of 2015, he did so with a reputation as a promising young striker whose end-of-season exploits spoke of better things to come.

However, two years on the now-23-year-old is seemingly no closer to a breakthrough at Elland Road, having featured only 12 times to date and spending this season on loan at Oldham Athletic.

A return of 10 goals in 40 matches does not tell the whole story, as he has not always started and had to wait until the final few months of the campaign to build some momentum in front of goal. But could the announcement of Leeds’ released and retained list offer a glimmer of hope for the young Scot.

After all, while the likes of Jordan Botaka and Ross Turnbull have moved on, Erwin remains under contract at Elland Road and could have one last pre-season to prove his worth.

Leeds United manager Garry Monk before the match

Still young enough and talented enough to make his mark at Leeds, he surely deserves a few more chances to build on his 10-goal campaign elsewhere, especially with the Whites lacking in the striking department when top-scorer Chris Wood is unavailable.

Only time will tell what Leeds manager Garry Monk has in store for Erwin, but if he has not given up on his dream of making it in Yorkshire, the recently released list of players whose dreams have been cut short will have offered him the faintest of chances.
