Leeds United are reportedly targeting Southend United goalkeeper Daniel Bentley.
According to the Daily Mail, Leeds United are stepping up their pursuit of Southend United goalkeeper Daniel Bentley ahead of the transfer window.
The Whites splashed out in the summer to sign the likes of Chris Wood, Stuart Dallas and Jordan Botaka, but manager Uwe Rosler may be eyeing up a new shot stopper.
Bentley, 22, has emerged through the ranks with Southend, and his impressive displays under Phil Brown have made him one of the top young goalkeepers in the Football League.
The Daily Mail believe that Leeds scouts have been watching Bentley ahead of a possible bid for the player, with his contract set to expire next summer – presenting the opportunity for a potential cut-price deal.
However, the speculation could suggest that manager Rosler has run out of patience with Leeds’ Italian goalkeeper Marco Silvestri, who has had an up-and-down time at Elland Road since his move from Chievo last summer.
The 24-year-old endured an error-strewn debut season at Leeds, and hasn’t fared much better this season either, with errors again creeping in to his game.
With Rosler looking to build a more solid defensive unit, replacing goalkeeper Silvestri may be the next logical step – and snapping up a young, up-and-coming English stopper like Bentley, who can fill the role for many years, could be the perfect deal for Rosler.
Bentley almost certainly wouldn’t leave Roots Hall to be a second choice elsewhere, and the speculation suggest that Rosler is lining up Bentley to replace Silvestri – and it will now be interesting to see whether the German selects Ross Turnbull over Silvestri in the coming weeks, if he has indeed lost faith in Silvestri.
