Leeds United’s first transfer of the summer could spell the end for their Jonny Howson pursuit.

Leeds United are on the verge of signing Mateusz Klich, with SkySports reporting last night he was due to have a medical ahead of his switch from FC Twente

The Polish midfielder is likely to be a key addition for the Whites, but it could impact Championship side Norwich City too.

Teamtalk reported earlier this summer that Leeds were strongly interested in re-signing midfielder Jonny Howson.

Howson was the Leeds captain prior to his switch in 2011, sold on to the Canaries to balance the books at Elland Road.

There was hope among fans that this new era of ownership may seek to bring Howson back, but Norwich were always going to be driving a hard bargain, especially as they are under pressure from Rangers to sell Graham Dorrans.

Leeds’ addition of Klich is an indicator they have elected not to pursue Howson, with the Pole playing in the same position and is cheaper than the Norwich man.

Central midfield is a position of strength for Leeds, with Liam Bridcutt, Eunan O’Kane experienced options and Ronaldo Vieira and Kalvin Phillips providing youth and depth.

The Whites also have Toumani Diagouraga and Luke Murphy who may yet get unlikely second chances under Thomas Christiansen, and with Klich set to sign, there is suddenly no great need to pursue Jonny Howson, as much as it would be a dream for fans to see him return.
