After stating his desire to stay at Spurs when his loan deal at Aston Villa ends, does Josh Onomah have a future in North London?
Aston Villa loanee Josh Onomah has sparked conversation over his Spurs future with a series of comments regarding his plans for next season.
The quote clearly suggests that Onomah’s intentions are to return to Spurs and fight for a place in the squad, but with the abundance of attacking talent at Mauricio Pochettino’s disposal, does the 20-year-old realistically have a future at Spurs?
Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen are two of the first names and occupy the two attacking midfield slots should the former Southampton boss opt for a 3-4-2-1 system, whilst Son Heung-min and Georges-Kevin Nkoudou are both pushing for first-team opportunities out wide.
Combine the talent on offer with rumours linking the London club to Watford’s Brazilian sensation Ricaharlison and it’s hard to see Onomah receiving any first-team opportunities next season.
However, that’s not to say that the youngster has no chance of a first-team breakthrough. Pochettino has a track record of giving young players first-team opportunities, with Harry Winks the latest academy star to break into the senior side. There’s no reason why Onomah can’t follow in Winks’ footsteps.
One of the key motivations for sending the 20-year-old out on loan to Villa was to gain experience playing in a wealth of positions in preparation for life at Spurs and having played in a deeper midfield role, out wide and in behind the striker so far this term, Onomah is certainly picking up the desired experience.
With Villa in the promotion mix, the England under-21 international may reassess his future come the end of the season should The Villains secure a return to the Premier League, but for now he remains set on a Spurs return.
