Gary Neville was speechless on Sky Sports’ coverage of Manchester City – Everton over the weekend following the introduction of academy talent James McAtee.
The City academy star made his Premier League debut on Sunday. And McAtee immediately impressed, with the midfielder showing off some good footwork as well as ball control in the final moments of the match.
And Neville, who was on co-commentary duty at the Etihad Stadium, couldn’t believe what he saw from the youngster. With the former Manchester United captain claiming that the City academy was a cloning device.
The ex-England international said as per City Xtra: “It’s not an academy, it’s a cloning system. They’re like clones, they’re all the same. It’s almost like David Silva’s left them all behind.”
Indeed, it was a comment that was met with a mixed reception on social media from City fans. With some supporters viewing the statement as Neville being jealous of the club’s academy.
Whilst United have produced some good players in recent years, City appear to be catching up to their Manchester rivals following the emergence of Phil Foden.

Neville’s comment were said in a tongue and cheek manner. But to some City fans on social media, they were’t pleased with the pundit’s comments on the club’s academy.
