Does German Pezzella’s reported Tottenham Hotspur move make no sense whatsoever?

German Pezzella is a target for Spurs and Atletico Madrid after a fine start to the life at Fiorentina in Serie A.

Mauricio Pochettino looks set to battle his former Argentina team-mate Diego Simeone in the January transfer window for the signature of Fiorentina defender German Pezzella. And who wouldn’t want ringside seats for that particular duel?

Italian paper Tuttosport (14^th November) claimed that the Fiorentina man is a target for both Tottenham Hotspur and Atletico Madrid in January.

La Viola only signed Pezzella on loan from Real Betis in the summer but his fine form in Serie A has attracted plenty of admirers, including Argentina coach Jorge Sampaoli. He handed the 26-year-old his maiden international caps against Russia and Nigeria over the international break.

It is understood that Fiorentina hope to make Pezzella’s move from Betis permanent for around £9 million – but Spurs and Atletico are waiting in the wings to swoop.

Risky move?

Though while there is no doubting Pezzella’s talent, centre-back is not exactly one of the weakest areas of Tottenham’s squad. In Belgium international team-mates Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen, Pochettino can call upon arguably the Premier League’s most in-tune defensive partnership.

Davinson Sanchez, meanwhile, has lived up to his club-record £42 million transfer fee in style (The Guardian), the former Ajax defender already looking like the complete centre-half and settling into English football with ease.

Juan Foyth, the highly-rated summer signing from Estudiantes, also looks a real talent whenever he has been given the chance to shine in Spurs’ first-team. And that’s without mentioning Eric Dier, the versatile England international who is equally adept in a back three or in defensive midfield.

So why would Pezzella swap a guaranteed place in Fiorentina’s starting XI to be possibly Spurs’ fourth, fifth or sixth choice centre-back? With the World Cup on the horizon and Pezzella forcing his way into Argentina’s squad, it makes little sense to upset the applecart with a risky January move.
