Beni Baningime has signed a new four-year deal at Everton after breaking into the Toffees first team this season under caretaker boss David Unsworth, but does that spell the end of Davy Klaassen?
The 19-year-old has made 12 appearances for the Toffees in all competitions this season, eight of which have come in the Premier League despite huge competition at Goodison Park.
The likes of Morgan Schneiderlin, Tom Davies, Idrissa Gueye, Wayne Rooney and James McCarthy are all vying for a place in the first team, though the latter remains injured with a double leg break.
The competition for a place in Everton’s midfield has even seen Muhamed Besic leave Merseyside, joining Championship giants Middlesbrough on loan until the end of the season.
But Baningime has stuck to his guns and has been rewarded by Sam Allardyce with a deal that will last until the summer of 2022. Faith in the DR Congo midfielder surely has ramifications for Klaassen, though.
Klaassen joined Everton in the summer from Ajax for a fee believed to be a fee of £25million, but has played just 16 minutes of Premier League football since October.
Ostracised already, surely increased faith in Everton’s youngsters such as Baningime will see him rise above the pecking order over Klaassen – and ruin the Dutchman’s chances of reigniting his career at Everton next season.
