Does Elmohamady’s attacking quality make up for shaky defensive performances since Aston Villa move?

The Aston Villa wide man has had his critics since arriving at the club.

Many of Aston Villa’s players have come in for criticism in the early weeks of the campaign, with summer signing Ahmed Elmohamady among them.

The Egyptian international is a Steve Bruce favourite and the Villa boss signed him from former club Hull City, but on early evidence the 30-year-old did little to impress his new supporters.

After starting his life at Villa as a winger, Elmohamady was moved to right-back for the recent clashes against Middlesbrough and Barnsley, and while his defensive work leaves a lot to be desired, his ball for Keinan Davis’s goal on Saturday proved just what he is capable of when he plays to his full potential.

It was a superb delivery and Villa fans could not help but applaud the work of a player who still prompts murmurs of unease through the terraces with some of his defensive play.

Can Villa fans overlook Elmohamady’s shaky work at the back if he continues to supply crosses like the one that lead to their third goal on Saturday? Only time will tell, but it is up to him to deliver where he can and from there anything is possible.
